How Long Does a Windshield Replacement Actually Take?

A cracked windshield needs to be replaced, so naturally one of the first questions most people ask is: “How long is this going to take?”

The good news is that windshield replacement usually doesn’t mean giving up your vehicle for an entire day. For many vehicles, the replacement itself can be completed relatively quickly. However, there’s more happening during the appointment than simply removing one piece of glass and installing another.

The type of vehicle, the windshield being installed, adhesive curing requirements and whether your vehicle requires ADAS calibration can all affect how long the complete process takes.

Here’s what to expect when you bring your vehicle to Master Glass Auto Glass.

How Long Does the Actual Windshield Replacement Take?

For many vehicles, the physical windshield replacement takes approximately 60 to 90 minutes.

During that time, the technician needs to carefully remove the damaged windshield, prepare the vehicle for the new glass, apply the appropriate urethane adhesive and accurately position the replacement windshield.

Some vehicles are more complicated than others. Trim pieces, sensors, cameras, rain sensors, heating elements and other equipment can add time to the process.

The goal isn't to replace the windshield as quickly as physically possible. It's to install it correctly.

Why Can't I Drive Away Immediately?

Once your new windshield is installed, the adhesive needs time to cure sufficiently before the vehicle can safely be driven.

This is commonly referred to as Safe Drive-Away Time.

The exact time can vary depending on the adhesive system being used as well as environmental factors such as temperature and humidity. Your technician will let you know when your specific vehicle is safe to drive.

This waiting period is an important part of a proper windshield replacement. Your windshield isn't simply there to block wind, rain and bugs. It's an important component of the vehicle's structure and occupant safety system.

Giving the adhesive the time it needs to properly set is not a step worth rushing.

Does My Vehicle Need ADAS Calibration?

This is one of the biggest reasons windshield replacement appointments can take longer on newer vehicles.

Many modern vehicles have a forward-facing camera mounted near the top of the windshield. That camera may support Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) such as lane departure warning, lane keeping assistance, forward collision warning, adaptive cruise control and automatic emergency braking.

When the windshield is removed and replaced, the camera's relationship to the road can change. Depending on the vehicle manufacturer's procedures, the system may need to be recalibrated after the new windshield is installed.

Calibration adds time to the appointment, but it's an important part of completing the windshield replacement correctly.

Static vs. Dynamic ADAS Calibration

Not every vehicle is calibrated the same way.

Some vehicles require static calibration, which is completed in a controlled shop environment using specialized targets and equipment positioned at precise distances from the vehicle.

Others require dynamic calibration, which involves driving the vehicle under specific road and driving conditions while the system performs its calibration procedure.

Some vehicles require both.

Dynamic calibration can also be affected by conditions outside the shop. Heavy rain or snow, poor visibility, unclear lane markings, road construction and other factors can make it difficult or impossible to properly complete the procedure.

That's why two vehicles receiving seemingly similar windshield replacements may have very different appointment times.

So, How Long Should I Plan to Be Without My Vehicle?

As a general rule, it's best to plan for a few hours rather than just the installation time.

A straightforward windshield replacement may be completed relatively quickly, while a newer vehicle requiring ADAS calibration can take longer.

Your appointment may include:

  • Removing the damaged windshield

  • Preparing the windshield opening

  • Installing and positioning the new glass

  • Reinstalling cameras, sensors and trim

  • Allowing the adhesive to reach its Safe Drive-Away Time

  • Completing ADAS calibration when required

  • Performing final checks before returning the vehicle

When you book with Master Glass Auto Glass, we'll look up the requirements for your particular vehicle and give you a better idea of the expected appointment time.

Why Does One Vehicle Take Longer Than Another?

Even vehicles of a similar size can have dramatically different windshield replacement procedures.

A relatively simple windshield on an older vehicle may have little more than a rearview mirror attached to it. A newer vehicle's windshield could incorporate a forward-facing camera, rain sensor, humidity sensor, heating elements, acoustic glass, antennas or a heads-up display.

The windshield itself has become a much more sophisticated component of the modern vehicle.

That's why it's difficult to give every customer the same answer when they ask how long replacement takes.

What Can You Do to Make the Appointment Faster?

Having your vehicle information available when you book helps us identify the correct glass and determine whether your vehicle requires calibration before you arrive.

If you're using ICBC coverage, Master Glass can also help with the insurance paperwork. That means you don't need to figure out the claims process on your own before getting your windshield replaced.

We'll help confirm the details and explain what to expect before the work begins.

The Quick Answer

If you're wondering how much time to set aside, here's the simple version:

  • Windshield installation itself: often around 60 to 90 minutes

  • Adhesive curing: additional time may be required before it's safe to drive

  • ADAS calibration: can add additional time depending on the vehicle and calibration method

  • Total appointment: it's safest to plan for a few hours

The exact timing depends on your vehicle, so we'll give you a more accurate estimate when you book.

Don't Rush a Windshield Replacement

We understand that nobody wants to spend their day waiting for their vehicle.

But when it comes to windshield replacement, faster isn't necessarily better.

Proper preparation, the correct glass, quality installation, sufficient adhesive curing time and accurate ADAS calibration all matter more than shaving a few minutes off the appointment.

At Master Glass Auto Glass, our goal is to get you back on the road as efficiently as possible without cutting corners on the parts of the job that matter.

If you need a windshield replacement in the Okanagan, contact Master Glass Auto Glass with your vehicle information. We'll help determine what your vehicle requires, provide an estimated appointment time and, if you're using ICBC coverage, take care of the insurance paperwork too.
